Diagnosis of a chronic disease such as type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) can be shocking for patients influencing their life. Getting aware of bad news like chronic illness diagnosis is a sensitive happening in patients’ life. Conversely, reactions to the reception of a diagnosis of diabetes can be varied for some reason. In order to manage the diseases through care planning, the identification and modification of the causes of different reactions are necessary. The aim of the present study was to explore how diabetics react to the reception of diabetes diagnosis and its possible reasons. This study has a qualitative design, using in-depth interviews. A qualitative approach was adopted using conventional content analysis of semi-structured interviews carried out with 20 participants with type 2 diabetes. The participants were selected by the purposeful sampling method. Participants have comprised of 11men and 9 women with type 2 diabetes who had been referred to the diabetes association of Iran to receive consulting services in the field of nutrition, psychology, and health care. Four themes of reactions have emerged from the study including emotional, cognitive, behavioral, and contextual reactions. Reactions to receiving a diagnosis of diabetes can be varied for some reason. The findings of the present study can be utilized by health care providers to obtain a more comprehensive understanding of unusual and usual reactions, their cause, and the context in the early years after the diagnosis and planning care programs for disease management.
