Abstract

Laryngeal cancer is still a prognostically serious disease with a high mortality rate. Despite advances in medical therapy and new surgical and non-surgical approaches, early diagnosis remains the best indicator of survival. The type of cancer, its extent, the general health of the patient, as well as the consequences of treatment related to speech and swallowing are important in determining the treatment plan. Total laryngectomy is a radical surgical procedure that leads to permanent loss of the generator and part of the voice resonator, the larynx, in which the basic laryngeal tone is created.

Aim: The aim of this study is to present the possibilities of verbal communication in laryngectomized patients by reviewing the relevant literature.

Methods: A literature review was conducted through the search engines www.pubs.asha.org, www.cjcrcn.org, www.scielo.org, www.journals.ekb.eg, www.biomedcentral.com, www.dovepress.com, written in period from 2018 to 2022 in Serbian and English. The analysis included a large number of papers.

Overview: This paper provides an overview of the possibilities of verbal communication in patients after laryngectomy, methods in the treatment of laryngeal cancer and methods in speech rehabilitation of laryngectomized patients. It also provides an overview through the contemporary literature in the field of laryngectomy.

Conclusion: After a total laryngectomy, it is most important to undergo speech rehabilitation, because it affects his/hers quality of life, i.e. his mental, social and physical well-being. Establishing verbal communication, returning to the family, profession and social environment requires planned and organized work of teams of different experts.
