THE ROLE OF INTERLEUKIN-8 IN DEVELOPMENT AND CLINICAL PROGRESSION OF CHRONIC PERIAPICAL LESIONS

IL-8 in periapical lesions

Keywords: periapical lesions, cytokines, chemokines, IL-8.

Abstract

Introduction/aim: Chronic apical periodontitis is a dynamic continuation of the presence of endodontic infection in the root canal system of the tooth, when the innate and acquired immune response is activated and various cells and inflammatory mediators are recruited, which cause the consequent destruction of periapical tissues and the formation of periapical lesions. The aim of the study was to determine the concentration of IL-8 in tissue homogenates of periapical lesions and to compare the obtained results with the symptoms of the patients and the size of the lesion.

Material and methods: 93 samples of chronic periapical lesions obtained after tooth extraction were analyzed. According to the clinical symptoms, the samples were divided into symptomatic and asymptomatic, and in relation to the size, into large and small lesions. The concentration of IL-8 was analyzed using an ELISA test.

Results: The results showed significantly higher concentration of IL-8 in symptomatic periapical lesions compared to asymptomatic ones (p<0.001). A statistically significant difference in the concentrations of this chemokine was also observed in the comparison of the large lesions to the small ones (p<0.001).

Conclusion: The higher concentration of IL-8 in lesions with pronounced clinical symptoms, as well as in large lesions, indicates that IL-8 is an important chemokine that contributes to the development of inflammation and the clinical progression of periapical lesions.
