INTERACTION OF NSAIDs AND LOW DOSE ACETYLSALICYLIC ACID
Abstract
Summary: ibuprofen may block antiaggregatory effect of low-dose aspirin by reducing aspirins binding to cyclooxygenase-1. Ibuprofen inhibitory effect is dosage depended. As the sales of NSAIDs and aspirin grow, the risk of their interaction is more important in everyday medical praxis. In vitro decrease of cyclooxygenase-1 blockade in the combined application of ibuprofen and aspirin exists, while aspirin interaction with other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs is negligible. There are conflicting data on the clinical effects of this interaction that require further monitoring. Patients using low-dose aspirin should avoid ibuprofen because the antiaggregatory effect is diminished and incidence of gastrointestinal bleeding with usage of two nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs is increased. Potential lack of benefit means that benefit / risk to the patient ratio doesn’t exist.
