Onion peel extracts ameliorate oxidative stress in Streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats
Abstract
Background: Onion peel extract contains Quercetin derivatives have been regarded as the most important flavonoids to improve diabetic status and has got antioxidant property in animal models. Vitamin E is an important lipid-soluble antioxidant present within cellular membranes and can play roles as a lipid-soluble scavenger. The present study was aimed to compare the efficacy to alleviate the altered redox balance of onion peel extract and vitamin E in diabetic rats. Methods: Streptozotocin -induced diabetic male Wister rats (n = 34) were randomly selected and divided into three groups. One group was fed with a normal diet only (diabetic control group), second group with 1% of OPE for 45 days and third group with vitamin E in the dose of 20 mg/kg body weight for same period. Results: Malondialdehyde and Protein carbonyls product formation were significantly suppressed and Superoxide dismutase activity was improved in different areas of brain by onion peel extract administration (P < 0.001) than diabetic control group whereas vitamin E neither decreased oxidative stress nor blood glucose concentration significantly. Conclusion: Amelioration of oxidative stress as well as hypoglycemic capability of onion peel extract was much more than Vitamin E in diabetic rat model.
