Abstract

The aim of our study was to evaluate distribution of ABO blood groups in sample of patients with diagnosed diabetes mellitus type 2 from Serbia. We have evaluated 62 patients from Serbia that were diagnosed with diabetes mellitus type 2. Further ABO blood groups were analyzed: A, B, AB and O. The presence of following risk factors was analyzed: positive family history, elevated triglycerides, increased blood pressure and overweight. Separately male and female genders were evaluated. The most frequent type of blood group in patients with diabetes mellitus type 2 was A blood group, while the least frequent was AB blood group. There is significant increase in distribution of AB blood group in patients with DM type 2 from Serbia compared with frequencies in Serbian population (p<0.05), while for other types of blood groups within ABO system we found non significant distinctions. The highest proportion of evaluated risk factors was noticed for patients with O blood group, while the least proportion for those with A blood group but without statistical significance. Although the sample size of patients is small, the values of our results cold be the initial trends of possible correlation between ABO blood groups and diabetes mellitus type 2 and correlation between ABO blood groups and risk factors in patients with diagnosed diabetes mellitus type 2. Therefore, further studies are needed on larger number of patients.
