Abstract

Urban tourism gained much significance recently, and is especially important for the countries withu nderdeveloped tourism offer. The demand for its forms in which the main source of information about the location are local residents has also increased. This is why it is important to study the ways residents experience the sorroundings they live in.

Thus, this research concerns the locals' experiences of the Novi Sad pedestrian zone, the most attractive part of the city. The goal of the research is to present a map of different  experiences they have and constructs they use to describe it and evaluate it.  Since there are no previous attempts to make such a map, the approach to the subject is qualitative and exploratory. 22 residents (21-63 years old) drew cognitive maps of the area, were interviewed and were assigned to elicit constructs.

The research gave an insight into a spectrum of aspects of the zone significant for the locals. What attracts them to it is its authentic architecture and the 'old times spirit' and what they dislike is a commercial offer of the cafés and shops which dominate the area. The results provide guidelines for urban and cultural development of the city.
