Abstract

The goal of this research was to determine differences between successful and less successful tennis players regarding their goal orientation and self-confidence, and also to examine correlation between two of these psychological construct. Active male tennis players (N=40), ranked on senior list of Tennis Federation of Austria, age 18 to 26, fulfilled the questionnaire TEOSQ-D1 (Würth, Alfermann i Saborowski, 1999), and questionnaire CSI (Vealey, 1986), just before national senior championship of Austria. After categorizing “successful tennis player” – the one ranked in top 100 (N=20), and “less successful” – ranked outside top 100 (N=20), it was conducted, with the help of T-test, the analyses of their differences concerning goal orientation and self-confidence, but no statistically significant differences were determined for any of the scales. Pearson’s coefficient for entire sample showed that task orientation correlate significant with trait sport-confidence (r= 0,451; Sig.˂ 0,05), and modest with state sport-confidence (r= 0,387; Sig.= 0,092), but that correlation is not statistically significant at the level Sig.˂ 0,05. For scale result/ego orientation there were no significant correlation with sport-confidence. Guidelines for future research are based on development of more adequate system for evaluation of success in sport, and also on increasing of sample size. This could be very helpful for bringing more reliable conclusion about influence of goal orientation preference on sport-confidence and sport success, what could justify utilization of this psychological construct for practical purposes.
